Spiral Dynamics
by Beck & Cowan (after Graves)
Eight color-coded worldviews from Beige (survival) to Turquoise (holistic).
Summary
Building on Clare Graves' research, Spiral Dynamics describes value-memes (vMEMEs) that emerge as life conditions become more complex. Each level transcends and includes the prior: Beige → Purple → Red → Blue → Orange → Green → Yellow → Turquoise. Different vMEMEs respond to different incentive logics.
For designers
Diagnose the *value system* of your audience before choosing rewards. Orange responds to achievement and ROI; Green to inclusion and consensus; Blue to order, duty, and rules. A misaligned vMEME-incentive pairing reads as offensive.
